in detail
With their mouthpieces and cross-keys, the flutes mimic birdsong; they lead the dance and express the emotions of love. They belong to Matthieu Bertaud’s family; he breathes with them and knows them inside out. Surrounded by a dozen music stands, as if at the centre of a mysterious star, the flautist traverses eras and styles to offer an incredible musical fireworks display.

Character? She certainly has plenty of that!
The flute will be Matthieu Bertaud’s companion in a solo recital, *Les Caractères de la Flûte*, specially designed for young audiences. An opportunity to (re)discover the vast family of early recorders.
A tube, a whistle and a few holes… the flute is a simply constructed instrument with a universal character. It possesses a strong poetic potential, perfectly imitates the agile and voluptuous song of birds, expresses feelings of love through the gentleness and sweetness of its melodic lines, and leads to the joys of dance with its pastoral quality.
Spanning eras and styles, surrounded by a dozen stands with a multitude of faces, all set within a mysterious star… Come and explore the world of the flute with Matthieu and put it through its paces!

Welcome to the church of Saint-Martin de la Croupte
The Saint-Martin church is located in La Croupte (now part of the new commune of Livarot-Pays-d'Auge). It is a typical example of rural Norman religious heritage, surrounded by its small cemetery, which authentically bears witness to the history and traditional architecture of the region's villages.

find out more about the artist!
Initially trained in the Rhône-Alpes region with A. Girard and F. Thouvenot, Matthieu studied recorder with Sébastien Marq at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (Netherlands) and with Pierre Hamon at the Lyon National Conservatory of Music. He simultaneously specialized in early flutes with Serge Saïtta. Holding the State Diploma in Early Instruments, he taught early music and recorder for ten years in the Lyon region. A fervent enthusiast, he is enthusiastic about the revival of the recorder, thus creating the Consort Aperto Libro, which works to revive this instrument and more generally to promote Renaissance wind instruments. Since 2018, Matthieu Bertaud has focused his professional activities on his work as a performing artist. He is dedicated to chamber music and orchestral playing within several renowned instrumental and vocal ensembles: Ensemble Correspondances (conducted by Sébastien Daucé), with whom he has performed regularly since 2008 in France and internationally (Colombia, Lebanon, Mexico, USA, Canada, Singapore, China), and has made numerous critically acclaimed recordings; Ensemble Les Surprises (artistic director: L.N. Bestion de Camboulas). He also participates in the unique and innovative projects of Ensemble Artifices (conducted by Alice Julien-Laferrière). Matthieu Bertaud also created a show for young audiences, "PIPO," with the Compagnie des Zeph'. Deeply involved in the cultural life of his region, Matthieu Bertaud has been coordinating a children's book festival since 2021, fostering encounters between artists, authors, illustrators, and young readers. This initiative extends his commitment to artistic transmission and mediation, values that have permeated his entire career.
