description

in detail

No one knows exactly where RédèR Nouhaj comes from, other than that he was born during a journey through the Caucasus. His world draws inspiration from the nature of traditional forests, the rhythm of seasonal migrations across the plains, and the unlikely sound-making objects of childhood. A one-man band with his hand- and foot-operated instruments, RédèR Nouhaj is never truly alone. He wields his violin like a woodcutter wields his axe: with precision, humility and gratitude for the felled tree.

Among human beings, shamans and children are the ones who best understand the dance of life. Before his audience, RédèR Nouhaj is a bit of both.

A production by the Les Vibrants Défricheurs collective, supported by DRAC Normandie, the Normandy Region, the Department of Seine-Maritime, the City of Rouen, the City of Sotteville-lès-Rouen and the City of Petit-Quevilly.

find out more about the artist!

During a trip to Russia, Frédéric Jouhannet discovered in a record store a collection of traditional music from the 1960s to the 1990s recorded in the Caucasus. From this inexhaustible source sprang the desire to create an imaginary character, a man of several folklores, who would bear the mysterious name of Rédèr Nouhaj. Alone on stage, the artist breaks free from all conventions to express an impetuous creativity. To this end, he surrounds himself with a creative and wild array of instruments: we encounter, in turn, a spinning wheel horse, bell masks sewn (by himself), a record-turning dervish… In this tumult of inventiveness, one element remains unchanged since his time with Jeunesses Musicales France with Voï-Voï and then King Biscuit: his virtuosity punctuated by lyrical and powerful improvisations. Rubbed, scraped, or struck, his violins remain his most faithful companions on the road. At his feet, one finds a brass band bass drum, a travel trunk, or even a tuning pedal.

A violinist and violist by training, Frédéric Jouhannet is interested in many instruments and explores various musical styles. He teaches traditional music at the Rouen Regional Conservatory and is passionate about the oral transmission of music. Reflecting his curiosity and creativity, he creates numerous shows in which music intersects with poetry, drawing, film, dance, and travel.
