in detail

Love in music has marvellous virtues: when one loves, it is until death – or even beyond –; one then dies to the strains of a noble madrigal and is resurrected by the gallant fragrance of a villanelle. A sovereign figure in the French Grand Siècle, superb amongst the Italians, a natural and cheerful soprano, Gwendoline Blondeel embodies the many faces of Love when the scholarly polyphony of the Renaissance gives way to the fiery, baroque expression of the solo voice.

With Mathilde Vialle on the viola da gamba and Manon Papasergio, here on the harp – we’ll find her on the viola at the Château de Canon – it is a little as if the Three Graces of mythology were sketching mischievous pitfalls and rivers of tears on the map of the land of Tendre.

Welcome to Saint-Michel Church

The Church of Saint Michael in Cabourg is a Neo-Gothic religious building, constructed between 1849 and 1851 under the direction of architect Michel Pelfresne. It was built in response to the growth of the seaside resort of Cabourg, which attracted increasing numbers of visitors and residents in the 19th century. Its architecture is inspired by the great Gothic cathedrals, with soaring vaults and stained-glass windows. In 1920, a new spire was added, slightly altering its appearance and reinforcing its imposing presence in the town's landscape. Today, this spire is undergoing a renovation project to preserve the integrity of the building. The Church of Saint Michael is not only an active place of worship, but also a testament to Cabourg's architectural and religious past. It symbolizes the town's evolution from a fishing village to a popular Belle Époque destination.

In 2021, Mondoville's Titon et l’Aurore, conducted by William Christie and directed by Basil Twist, revealed Belgian soprano Gwendoline Blondeel in the role of Aurora: with admirable vocal technique, a luminous timbre, and a striking stage presence, she literally lit up the stage of the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Trained at the IMEP in Namur and a graduate of the La Monnaie Theatre Academy in Brussels, Gwendoline then joined the Young Ensemble of the Grand Théâtre de Genève. As early as 2019, she established herself as a rising star, winning First Prize at the Froville Competition. Gwendoline has become a highly sought-after interpreter of 17th- and 18th-century music, but she also explores a much broader repertoire, extending to composers as diverse as Delibes and Offenbach. This is evidenced by the diversity of scores performed with conductors such as William Christie (Titon and L’Aurore, Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres, Bach’s Magnificat…), Leonardo García Alarcón (Rossi’s Il Palazzo Incantato, Handel’s Solomon, Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine…), Diego Fasolis (Vivaldi’s La Senna Festeggiante), Jérémie Rhorer (Mozart’s The Magic Flute), Jean-Christophe Spinosi (Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri), Alejo Perez (Prokofiev’s War and Peace), and Kazushi Ono (Honegger’s Joan of Arc at the Stake). The last two seasons have been particularly fruitful: debuts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with Les Arts Florissants; Her first concerts were at the Berlin Philharmonie and then at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Vox Luminis in Bach's St. Matthew Passion; Charpentier's David et Jonathan with Correspondances and Sébastien Daucé in a production directed by Jean Bellorini in Caen, Nancy, Paris, Luxembourg, Madrid, Lille, and Lyon. At the Liège Opera, she sang her first Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro (Christophe Rousset, Emilio Sagi), also making her US debut with Opera Lafayette in the first modern revival of Rameau's opera-ballet Io. The summer of 2024 proved to be intense. At the Beaune Festival, Gwendoline tackled two major Handel roles: Morgana in Alcina (Les Épopées, Stéphane Fuget) and Almirena in Rinaldo (Les Accents, Thibault Noally). As artist-in-residence at the Wallonia Festival, she gave no fewer than eight concerts there, collaborating with the Cappella Mediterranea (Leonardo García Alarcón) and the Justin Taylor Consort. She will reunite with this ensemble at the Radio France Auditorium for Monteverdi's Vespers of the Virgin, conducted by Lionel Sow. The Royal Opera of Versailles has become a favorite venue for Gwendoline: in addition to concerts (Le Carnaval du Parnasse with Alexis Kossenko, Lully's Atys with Christophe Rousset, Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Valentin Tournet), she acclaimed the role of Blondchen in Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio with Gaétan Jarry conducting and Michel Fau directing, before her equally masterful portrayal of Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen (Hervé Niquet and Romain Gilbert). Her role debut as Marie in Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment (Gaétan Jarry and Jean-Romain Vesperini) was praised for her vocal virtuosity and exceptional stage presence. Gwendoline also maintains a regular collaboration with Reinoud Van Mechelen and his ensemble A nocte temporis, performing the great French repertoire. The 2025/2026 season saw her further expand her repertoire. In Versailles, she sang Clorinda in a French version of Rossini's La Cenerentola (conducted by Gaétan Jarry and directed by Julien Lubek and Cécile Roussat), then Dalinda in Handel's Ariodante (Stefan Plewiak and Nicolas Briançon), before performing Messiah with the Royal Opera Orchestra and reprising The Abduction from the Seraglio (the production also ran at the Tours Opera). Other highlights include her first collaboration with Philippe Herreweghe in Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 2 "Lobgesang"), her debut at the Zurich Opera in Leclair's Scylla et Glaucus (Emmanuelle Haïm and Claus Guth), and Rameau's Les Boréades in a concert version with A Nocte Temporis (Toulouse, Bruges, Versailles, etc.). Gwendoline is very active in the recording world, most recently with a new version of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo with Les Épopées; the world premiere of Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Céphale et Pro-cris, with A Nocte Temporis; Philippe d'Orléans' La Jérusalem délivrée with La Cappella Mediterranea; Mondonville's Le Car-naval du Parnasse with Les Ambassadeurs; and Mozart's Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots with Il Caravaggio for the Versailles Chateau Spectacle label. Her next album will be released by Harmonia Mundi in the fall of 2025.

Mathilde began playing the viola da gamba at the age of 8 at the Bordeaux Conservatory (CNR) in Paul Rousseau's class. After studying for two years with Matthieu Lusson at the Poitiers Conservatory (CNR), she entered the Lyon Conservatory (CNSM) in Marianne Muller's class. She continued her studies with Philippe Pierlot and Mieneke Van der Velden at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. A prizewinner in several international competitions, she performs with various ensembles such as Ensemble Correspondances (Sébastien Daucé) and Les Arts Florissants (William Christie). She founded the Duo Coloquintes with violinist Alice Julien-Laferrière. They have recorded three albums: Forberger en tête à tête (Son an Ero, 2016), Louis Couperin en tête à tête (Seulétoile, 2019), and Music for Two (Seulétoile, 2025). She also dedicates herself to the repertoire for two viols with violist Myriam Rignol (à deux violes esgales, 2021, Château de Versailles Spectacles). In September 2019, she recorded François Couperin's Pièces de viole with the bass guitar, released in 2021 on the Château de Versailles label and which received a "Choc" award from Classica magazine. She performs in concert with theorbo player Thibaut Roussel and co-directs several recording projects with him, including The Last Rose (Harmonia Mundi, Stradivari, 2025). A recording devoted to the third book of pieces for viol by M. Marais will be released in 2026 (Mirare). Mathilde is a co-founder of the Cantate à Tours concert series, which presents a Bach cantata each month at the Temple de Tours. Mathilde taught viola da gamba in the second and third academies of the Pays d’Auge region alongside Lucile Richardot, Damien Guillon, Thibaut Roussel, and Sébastien Daucé in July 2024 and July 2025. Since September 2023, she has been a visiting lecturer at the Pôle Aliénor (higher education center in Poitiers).

A multi-instrumentalist musician, Manon Papasergio has chosen the vast world of early music to allow the different facets of her musical personality to flourish. Initially drawn to the cello, which she studied in Caen, she then began playing the harp and viola da gamba at the Tours Conservatory. Charmed by the plurality of artistic paths open to her, she chose to dedicate herself to them at the Lyon National Conservatory of Music and Dance. There, between 2019 and 2025, she studied baroque cello, early harp, and viola da gamba with Emmanuel Balssa, Angélique Mauillon, and Myriam Rignol. This training is enriched by musical and personal encounters that lead her to co-found ensembles such as the Renaissance violin consort La Capriola, with which she obtained a master's degree in chamber music in 2024, and the medieval trio Ecco la Primavera, specializing in the creation of musical tales. Appreciated for her continuo skills, Manon is sought after as a viol player, harpist, or cellist by numerous early music ensembles, including Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, La Guilde des Mercenaires, La Nébuleuse, and Cappella Mediterranea. Noted in 2023 at the Bach-Abel International Viola da Gamba Competition, where she won first prize, Manon naturally turned to the viola da gamba for her first recording as a soloist, which gives her the opportunity to explore the flamboyant and intriguing repertoire of the Italian viola bastarda.
