description

in detail

Though they bring together acoustic instruments—the viola, the mandole, and the guembri—the duo of Séverine Morfi and Malik Ziad is as electrifying as a trance. Though they juxtapose composition and improvisation, natural resonance and electronic effects, contemporary jazz and traditional Arab-Andalusian

and African music, it is a space of fusion. In the chapel of the former Grestain Abbey, as secretive as a fairy cave, the boundaries of style and culture are bridged by a shared energy—timeless and triumphant—which suits these stones linked to William, Duke of Normandy…

Welcome to Grestain Abbey

The ancient Grestain Abbey was founded in 1050 by Herluin of Conteville, husband of Arlette, the widow of Duke Robert the Magnificent and mother of William the Conqueror. Richly endowed by William and by the two sons Arlette had with Herluin (William's half-brothers, Robert, Count of Mortain, and Odo, Bishop of Bayeux), its wealth was legendary. It received revenues from countless manors, mills, churches, and markets in both England and Normandy, as attested by the "Grestain Charter" of 1082, signed by William himself. • It was William's family abbey. His mother and stepfather spent the last years of their lives there and were buried there along with many other members of the ducal family. • It also fulfilled the social function that abbeys of the time played: caring for the poor, the sick, and providing education. Despite the pillaging and fires during the Hundred Years' War, it still experienced periods of glory. Charles VII stayed there during the siege of Honfleur (1450), and it was from there that he ordered an inquiry into the trial of Joan of Arc. Charles VIII also visited the abbey.

She has been the artistic director of the gArden company since 2017 and plays a hybrid viola created in collaboration with luthier Patrick Charton.

Malik Ziad Malik Ziad is a self-taught Franco-Algerian musician with a passion for traditional stringed instruments such as the guembri and the Algerian mandole. Born in Algeria, he was immersed from a very young age in the rhythms and melodies of chaâbi and gnawa music, which he reinterprets with a contemporary sensibility. Based in France, he has developed a unique musical language, blending North African traditions with the sounds of jazz, blues, and world music. A regular collaborator of Piers Faccini, with whom he shares an affinity for cultural fusion, Malik Ziad has also performed alongside artists such as his brother, Karim Ziad, and Yom. In 2022, he won a Victoire du Jazz award for the project "Les Égarés," alongside Piers Faccini and Karim Ziad. Renowned for his virtuosity and inventiveness, he also leads workshops on Algerian mandole, passing on his knowledge and passion to new generations of musicians. His career illustrates an artistic approach rooted in tradition, yet resolutely oriented towards innovation and intercultural dialogue.
