Welcome to the Notre-Dame-d'Estrées-Corbon church
Perched atop its mound at the foot of a high hill, the Church of Notre-Dame d’Estrées stands gracefully above the old Roman road, now the D16. From here, the view encompasses the marshes of the Carrefour Saint-Jean, and one understands why this location was chosen for its beauty. Visible from afar, the building bears witness to centuries of history, faith, and resilience. Built in the 13th, 16th, and 18th centuries, the church comprises a 13th-century Romanesque chancel, enhanced by a straight apse supported by early buttresses. Two lancet windows illuminate this space, surmounted by a high gable and a finely sculpted torus molding. The triumphal arch that connects the chancel to the nave still bears traces of its Gothic grandeur. To the west, a massive stone tower, built at the end of the 15th century, dominates the entrance. Unfinished, it was intended to have a tall pyramidal spire. Crowned with a quadrangular dome pierced with dormer windows and surmounted by a lantern, it is flanked by an elegant turret housing a spiral staircase. A doorway adorned with a pointed arch and surmounted by a large pointed window provides access to the former gallery. The interior reveals a wealth of liturgical furnishings. The chancel houses a 17th-century altarpiece, at the center of which a Transfiguration is framed by the figures of Saint Martin and Saint Jerome. At the top, an emblematic scene: the charity of Saint Martin, sharing his cloak with a poor man. The pulpit, the Louis XV confessional, the Pietà, and the painted wainscoting complete the ensemble in a balance between austerity and refinement. But this church has come a long way. In the 1980s, its alarming condition, particularly that of the bell tower, prompted action from Yves Lescroart, then regional curator. Under his leadership and thanks to the commitment of Mayor Jacques Talbot, the local council, state services, the Calvados General Council, private donors, and the Association for the Preservation of the Church, a major restoration was undertaken. Directed by heritage architect François Pougheol, the work encompassed the bell tower, roofs, timber frame, vaults, floors, walls, and furnishings, restoring the building to its former glory. On August 8, 2015, Bishop Jean-Claude Boulanger, Bishop Emeritus of Bayeux and Lisieux, came to bless the restored church, restoring to this place its full spiritual and communal purpose. Since then, the Church of Notre-Dame d’Estrées has faithfully welcomed celebrations and visitors, musicians and the public, in an atmosphere of peace, remembrance, and hope.
