in detail

Every year, our festival is delighted to welcome a leading contemporary pianist.

An international talent, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger – a virtuoso instrumentalist steeped in literature, an intense composer enamoured with the colours of sound – invites us on an inspired journey: love in Schubert, imaginary vistas in Debussy, and the phantasmagoria of the romantic universe of the German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann. These are the tender reveries and exalted fervour of Schumann’s Kreisleriana. They are the surprise of a few hallucinatory pieces taken from Juliette Dillon’s Tales of Hoffmann. Taken by cholera in 1854 at the age of 30, she is one of those composers who were once acclaimed but then erased from the forgetful memory of ‘matrimoine’, now rediscovered in history’s treasure trove.

Welcome to the salt storehouse

Built in the 17th century using stones from the city's old ramparts, the Honfleur Salt Warehouses conceal within them a treasure of astonishing architecture. Entering these immense buildings is to gaze up at a spectacular timber frame, designed by shipwrights to perfectly replicate an upturned ship's hull. In the dim light of these impressive spaces, one can almost smell the pungent scent of salt and hear the distant murmur of sailors on long voyages. Once used to store the precious "white gold" essential to cod fishing expeditions, these monuments now offer a space of raw and austere beauty. The atmosphere is solemn and majestic. The silence that pervades these centuries-old oak beams envelops the visitor, transforming this place of labor and memory into an exceptional setting where the maritime soul of Normandy resonates. The Honfleur Salt Warehouses were built in 1670 to store up to 10,000 tons of salt, essential at the time for preserving fish and collecting the salt tax. Of the three original buildings, two have survived. Listed as Historical Monuments, they are famous for their impressive oak timber frame, built like the hull of a ship, and today host exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events.
