description

in detail

The vocal ensemble Stile Antico takes us back in time to the Renaissance, when, in Europe, amid dreams of a rediscovered Antiquity, everything seemed possible—including the possibility of living through art and humanism, if not in peace. Every city then shone with a thousand splendors and vied with a thousand creations for the glory of the Church and of a polyphonic music in perpetual reinvention. In Rome, the luxury of papal power; in Paris, the buzz of learning and merchants; in Seville and Lisbon, the treasures of the lands of plenty at the ends of the earth; in Venice, the geniuses of the future…

Beneath the flamboyant ribs of the Church of Saint-Michel in Pont-l’Évêque, the Londoners of Stile Antico illuminate with twelve voices the pages of a travel journal through the golden cities of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Welcome to Saint Michael's Church

Saint Michael's Church is located in the heart of the town, near the large Chain Bridge, on the left bank of the Touques River, where a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael for the monks of Saint-Hymer stood in the 12th century. Built in the Flamboyant Gothic style for its nave and chancel, the northern section of Saint Michael's Church dates from the 15th century, while its south façade, modified in the 19th century, remains Gothic but with more elaborate ornamentation. Its relatively massive western tower probably dates from the 13th century. The church suffered damage during the Wars of Religion, notably during the siege of the town by Henry IV in 1590, and during the Second World War. It was rebuilt in 1628, during which work included the construction of vaulted side aisles with pendentives. The restoration of 1867 removed a small side portal and the chancel woodwork. In 1888, restoration work allowed for the construction of the stone vault and the triforium. Following the war, it was reopened for worship in 1946 after further restoration of the nave and side aisles. The most recent restoration, dating from the early 1990s, focused on the bell tower. The church consists of a raised nave of eight bays with side aisles. It has no transept. The cylindrical pillars, which lack capitals, support the ribs of the large arcades. The side walls are lined with a narrow gallery. The massive tower stands at the west end. The building was listed as a historical monument in 2008.

Stile Antico has firmly established itself as one of the world’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles. Working without a conductor, its twelve members have thrilled audiences on four continents with their fresh, vibrant, and moving interpretations of Renaissance polyphony. Their acclaimed recordings have garnered numerous accolades, including the Gramophone Award for Early Music, the Diapason d’Or of the Year, the Edison Klassiek Award, and the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. The ensemble has received three Grammy® Award nominations and performed live at the 60th Grammy® Awards ceremony at Madison Square Garden. Based in London, Stile Antico has performed in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals. The group maintains particularly close ties with Wigmore Hall and has performed at the BBC Proms, Buckingham Palace, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Cité de la Musique, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, and the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid. Stile Antico is regularly invited to perform at major European festivals, including the early music festivals in Antwerp, Bruges, Utrecht, and York, the Lucerne Easter Festival, and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Since its North American debut in 2009 at the Boston Early Music Festival, Stile Antico has toured extensively in the United States and Canada. The ensemble performs regularly in Boston and New York, and has sung at the Ravinia Festival, the National Cathedral and Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Chan Centre in Vancouver, and in concert series across 25 U.S. states. Stile Antico has also performed in Mexico, Colombia, South Korea, Macau, and Hong Kong. Stile Antico’s performances are often praised for their immediacy, expressive commitment, and sensitive, imaginative approach to the text. These qualities stem from the group’s collaborative working method: members rehearse and perform like chamber musicians, each contributing their artistic vision to the musical outcome. The ensemble is also known for its engaging programming, which weaves thematic connections between works to offer fresh perspectives on Renaissance music. In addition to its core repertoire, Stile Antico has premiered works by Kerry Andrew, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Joanna Marsh, John McCabe, Nico Muhly, Giles Swayne, and Huw Watkins. Its diverse collaborations include Fretwork, the Folger Consort, Marino Formenti, Lemn Sissay, B’Rock, Rihab Azar, and Sting. Alongside its concerts and recordings, Stile Antico is committed to sharing its repertoire and working methods with the widest possible audience. After many years in residence at the Dartington International Summer School, the group now leads workshops at Gresham’s Music Summer School and regularly organizes “Come and Sing” days open to all. Stile Antico also works extensively with young singers in schools and universities, as well as with the Rodolfus Foundation. The support of its charitable foundation, the Stile Antico Foundation, has enabled the ensemble to offer scholarships to talented young ensembles and to run an annual Youth Consort program. Stile Antico is proud to be a member of REMA (the European Early Music Network). In 2025, Stile Antico will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a professional ensemble with gala concerts at Wigmore Hall, the Boston Early Music Festival, and for AMUZ Antwerp. The group will also mark the 500th anniversary of Palestrina, the undisputed master of stile antico, with a series of concerts and the release of a new album on Decca Classics.
