description

in detail

Is the term “Italian opera” a pleonasm? It was born there in the 17th century, flourished in the 18th century before the boxes of “Italian-style” theaters, and between the splendor of the music and the red velvet of the language, it donned all its finery in the 19th century: Rossini’s virtuoso exuberance, Donizetti’s

abundant romanticism, Verdi’s heart-wrenching drama.

Under the direction of Tanguy de Williencourt—you know him as a pianist; we invited him in 2023—the Ensemble de l’Opéra Normandie Rouen welcomes a young artist with a brilliant future: Manon Lamaison, with her opalescent soprano voice, radiates lightness and is deeply moving in every aria of this brilliant and captivating program.

Welcome to the Lisieux theatre

The Lisieux Normandie Theatre is an Italian-style theatre, built in 1895 and renovated to its original design in the 1980s. The building has been listed as a supplementary historical monument since 1985. It is one of those architectural gems of the Italian style, with façades, a roof, murals, and stage curtains typical of this style. Each season, it offers a multidisciplinary program both on and off-site, with a focus on opera. The theatre is one of the facilities managed by the Lisieux Normandie Agglomeration Community.

The true heart of the institution, the Orchestra has, since September 1, 2024, united the Normandy Regional Orchestra and the Rouen Normandy Opera Orchestra. This new ensemble brings together fifty-eight musicians deeply committed to the region and its audiences, with an boundless passion for all repertoires. Alternating between the pit for opera and the stage for symphonic works, the Orchestra explores the full spectrum of music, from Baroque to contemporary. Seeking interpretations that respect historical periods and styles, it performs the oldest scores on instruments strung with gut strings, often complemented by natural brass and adapted timpani. Its virtuosity is equally evident when it comes to supporting contemporary composers and bringing musical creation to a wider audience. The Orchestra, based in Rouen and in residence in Mondeville, presents its season throughout Normandy with over a hundred concerts spanning the region from Giverny to Cherbourg, from Dieppe to Granville. Whether performing together, in chamber ensembles, or as soloists, their commitment to excellence remains unwavering. Deeply dedicated to young audiences and the wider sharing of music, the Orchestra offers a wide range of outreach programs across the region, in schools, hospitals, prisons, and other settings. The Orchestra also works to facilitate encounters with audiences with physical and mental disabilities, notably through Relaxation sessions and resources such as vibrating vests and audio descriptions of opera performances.

Manon Lamaison Manon Lamaison is a young soprano whose career has skyrocketed on the French operatic scene. For the 2024/2025 season alone, four new roles have been added to her repertoire. She will sing Sister Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Papagena in The Magic Flute at the Opéra de Tours, and Giannetta in L'Elisir d'Amore at the Opéra de Nancy. She will also sing Marie in La Fille du Régiment at the Napa Festival in the US this summer. In 2023, the Opéra de Montpellier has invited her to sing in Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust, as well as for its opening concert of the 2023/2024 season. That same year, she joined the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, where she was cast as Pamina in The Magic Flute, directed by Cédric Klapisch, a production she performed in Compiègne and Tourcoing. A graduate of the Lyon Conservatory (CNSMD) in Mireille Delunsch's class, she was also selected for the inaugural Jaroussky Academy, directed by countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. At the Opéra des Landes festival, she performed as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro in 2018 and as Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande in 2020. In 2022, she made her debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, where she was the understudy for the role of Beatrice in Dante's Il Viaggio, conducted by Kent Nagano, with music by Pascal Dusapin. That same year, Marc Minkowsky chose her to sing the role of Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro. With Les Musiciens du Louvre, they toured Europe for a year, performing in Spain, Italy, Israel, and France at the Bordeaux Opera and the Versailles Opera. Marc Minkowsky renewed his confidence in her, and for New Year's 2024, she sang the role of Cupid in Orpheus in the Underworld at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Passionate about chamber music and creating shows, she founded the Quatuor Ibaï ensemble. Their new show, KOSMA KAPELLA, an original creation based on the poems of the French author Prévert, will be performed from January 18 to March 9 at the Théâtre de la Croisée des Chemins in Paris. She performed for the first time across the Atlantic in New Orleans at the Marigny Opera House with Bon voyage!, a concert staged with local musicians, ranging from Caribbean and European classical music to contemporary music and traditional Yiddish songs.
