description

in detail

Two children in the forest, a house made of gingerbread and rock candy, a witch-ogre: the three musician-actors from the Normandy-based collective Ubique need next to nothing to put their own spin on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Or rather: three times four nothings… A dozen instruments with an old-fashioned feel (lute, theorbo, violin…), with strange flavors (kalimba, xiao…), a musical saw to slice the magic into pieces. The twelve feet of the Alexandrine verse they fold and refold like puff pastry. And the three times

four legs of the chairs where, seated, they exercise their gift of ubiquity, twirling with voice and gesture.

As on the stage of a rhythmic theater, dancing with words, sounds, and music…

Welcome to the Lisieux theatre

The Lisieux Normandie Theatre is an Italian-style theatre, built in 1895 and renovated to its original design in the 1980s. The building has been listed as a supplementary historical monument since 1985. It is one of those architectural gems of the Italian style, with façades, a roof, murals, and stage curtains typical of this style. Each season, it offers a multidisciplinary program both on and off-site, with a focus on opera. The theatre is one of the facilities managed by the Lisieux Normandie Agglomeration Community.

The Collective was born in 2012 from the meeting of three artists and their intrinsic artistic worlds: theater, instrumental and vocal music. Very quickly, the multiplicity of their disciplines became their strength. Each teaches the others, and their identity is refined and balanced through the creation of each piece, for which they handle every stage: writing, composition, directing, providing an outside perspective, set design… In nearly ten years, they have staged three original adaptations of famous fairy tales, radically revisited: Hansel and Gretel (2012), Sleeping Beauty (2017), and The Little Mermaid (2021). A three-part creative process during which they gradually develop their writing and soundscapes, diversify their instrumental techniques according to the dramaturgical needs, and reinforce a distinctive stage presence that has become their signature: Three chairs facing the audience. Their instruments and words are the only tools they allow themselves to conjure their sonic universe and stimulate the imagination. Each creation is constructed according to a precise balance between music, text, and meticulously choreographed gestures, with a single guiding principle: rhythm. Every detail counts, and nothing is left to chance.

VIVIEN SIMON Vivien Simon trained in singing at the Jeune Choeur de Paris (Young Choir of Paris) and then at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland in the class of Anthony Rooley and Evelyn Tubb. Alongside his musical studies, he trained as an actor at the Charles Dullin School of Dramatic Arts in Paris and as a Qi Gong instructor at the Les Temps du Corps school in Paris and at the Beidahe Qi Gong Institute in China. Since 2015, he has been a regular guest in Basel, leading workshops combining Qi Gong and stage work for students at the Schola Cantorum. He also plays the musical saw, the xiao (a type of flute), the bodhrán (a type of bagpipe), and the Centre-France bagpipe. In theatre, he has notably performed in Mishima's Hanjo, directed by Marie Hasse for the Théâtre du Temps in Paris; the Comédies de M. De Navarre, directed by Anne Berelowitch for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BnF) in Paris and the Château du Clos Lucé; and Jérémy Fisher by M. Rouabhi, directed by Audrey Daoudal for the Théâtre de Belleville in Paris. In music, he has sung as a chorister under the direction of Nicole Corti (Notre-Dame-de-Pont-de-Bretagne Choir School), Laurence Equilbey, Philippe Herreweghe, Suzanna Malki (Jeune Choeur de Paris), and Geoffroy Jourdain (Cris de Paris), and also worked with Nosfell on the musical tale Le lac aux Vélies. Since 2014, he has performed regularly with the company La Tempête, directed by Simon-Pierre Bestion, as a singer and dancer in staged programs blending Baroque music with electronic music and contemporary choreography. In 2015, he joined the medieval music ensemble Sollazzo, directed by Anna Danilevskaia, a sextet that won the top three prizes at the 2015 York Early Music International Young Artists Competition. Since then, they have performed at several major European festivals (Kölner Fest für Alter Musik, Stockholm Early Music Festival, AMUZ/Laus Polyphoniae in Antwerp, Trigonal Festival in Austria, Festtage Alter Musik in Basel, and the Ambronay Festival as part of the EEEmerging Ensembles program). In 2014, he founded Collectif Ubique with Audrey Daoudal and Simon Waddell, an artistic company dedicated to multidisciplinary creation. Their theatrical and musical adaptation of the tale of Hansel and Gretel has been performed throughout France as part of the Jeunesses Musicales de France program, as well as at the Philharmonie 2 in Paris. They are currently working on their second creation, an adaptation of Perrault's Sleeping Beauty for twelve instruments.

AUDREY DAOUDAL After studying violin at the Vierzon Conservatory of Music, Audrey pursued a Master's degree in Fundamental Linguistics at the University of Orléans. She then trained in theater at the Orléans Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Jean-Claude Cotillard's class, and later at the Charles Dullin School in Paris. She continued her training in various forms: Inspired by Olivier Py's play, *L'Apocalypse Joyeuse*, she participated in a workshop led by Samuel Churin and Olivier Py (Orléans National Dramatic Center), the workshop *L'énergie du clown, de l'intime à la démesure* (The Energy of the Clown, from Intimacy to Excess), led by François Pilon (Théâtre du Samovar), and toured France giving readings for Gallimard Jeunesse. In theater, she performed in Christelle Evita's play *Silence Travail!* (Silence, Work!), directed by Hélène Poitevin, which explores the theme of suffering in the workplace. After co-writing and co-directing *Le Mal du Pays*, a farcical fantasy, she directed *Jérémy Fisher*, a modern tale for all audiences by Mohamed Rouabhi that explores themes of childhood and difference. She will play Zinaïda Savichna in Chekhov's *Ivanov*, directed by Katia Ferreira and Mathieu Alexandre, in preparation with the Collectif La Carte Blanche ENSAD Montpellier. In film, she plays Julie in *François à la mairie* by Alice and Rose Philippon, produced by Asa Films, and more recently in the feature film *Les Bêtises*, also by the same directors. She recently acted in the short film *Le Coin des Sirènes*, directed by Adrianne Simoneau, and co-wrote *Les Lions de Mendoza* by Mathieu Alexandre, in which she also plays the role of Marina. *Les Lions de Mendoza* was selected for the 2016 Courts en Betton Film Festival in western France. In 2014, she founded Collectif Ubique with Vivien Simon and Simon Waddell, an artistic company dedicated to multidisciplinary creation. Their theatrical and musical adaptation of the tale Hansel and Gretel was performed throughout France as part of the Jeunesses Musicales de France festival, as well as at the Philharmonie 2 in Paris. They are currently working on their second creation, an adaptation of Perrault's Sleeping Beauty for twelve instruments.

SIMON WADDELL Of Franco-English origin, Simon Waddell began playing the lute at the age of nine in Normandy, studying with Xavier Cauhépé. He further developed his skills with various specialists, including Pascale Bocquet, Claire Antonini, Eugène Ferré, Charles Edouard Fantin, and Vincent Dumestre. After studying musicology at the Sorbonne, he trained in the early plucked string family at the Lyon Conservatory of Music under Rolf Lislevand. He performs as a continuo player. In 2013, he was selected to the European Academy of Ambronay, under the direction of the Argentinian conductor Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, to work on Monteverdi's Orfeo. This led him to perform at the Reims Opera, the Vichy Opera, the Grand Théâtre in Bourg-en-Bresse, the TAP in Poitiers, the Théâtre de la Roche-sur-Yon, and the BOZAR in Brussels. That same year, he participated in the revival of an opera by JB de Boismortier at the Chapelle de la Trinité under the direction of conductor Hervé Niquet, through the CNSM of Lyon. His activities as a musician have taken him to venues such as the "Jeunes Talents de la Musique Ancienne de Lanvellec" festival, the "Le Périgord Noir" festival under the direction of Michel Laplénie, recitals at the Société Française de Luthier, the Carnavalet Museum in Paris, the Lyon Museum of Textiles with his teacher Rolf Lislevand, on France Musique, and at the "Jeunes Talents" festival in Paris. Always interested in the fusion of different artistic disciplines, Simon co-founded the "Collectif Ubique" with Vivien Simon and Audrey Daoudal, a multidisciplinary artistic company. The Collectif notably collaborates with "Jeunesses Musicales de France" on the theatrical and musical tale of Hansel and Gretel. This same show was performed at the Philharmonie 2 amphitheater in Paris.
