Leçons de Ténèbres : Ensemble Correspondances

Composed for the liturgy of Holy Wednesday, these Darknesses, however, have nothing of the bitter abyss: the French 17th century is not the century of romantic sorrows. After the flamboyant musical reign of Lully, François Couperin was the intimate musician at the court of Louis XIV – with His Majesty, he shared cruel sorrows and meditative consolations. And rather than giving himself over to the torches of the stage, he entrusts himself to the harpsichord and the voices. Not too much is needed in this music, but all the same: Italian colors shine through under the amber varnish, the balance is subtle between contemplation and conflagration. We don't promise to light the fire, but at least a few candles.
