description

in detail

This little walk in the Renaissance, intended for children, is all the more open to adults that few of us are familiar with book cones and sacqueboutes! The cornet may come down from the horns of animals in which one blew since antiquity, the «book» has nothing to do with the ibex, nor indeed with the libraries, but with the «mouth» of the instrument... The sacqueboutes are the ancestors of the trombones, which must be «sacked» (pulled) and «moved» (pushed) to change the note. Lambert Colson, virtuoso musician and cornet doctor, illuminates us in the unusual setting of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel in Équemauville, contemporary with the instruments in question, with its magical colors and fabulous ex voto of sailors caught in the wind of storms.

COMPANY

The chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Équemauville, overlooking Honfleur, is a religious building with a history dating back to the eleventh century. According to tradition, in 1023, Richard II, Duke of Normandy, made a vow to build a chapel in honor of the Virgin Mary after escaping a storm at sea. The first chapel was destroyed in 1538 by a landslide, but a new building was rebuilt between 1600 and 1615, thanks to the support of the inhabitants and sailors. The current chapel, in Norman style of the seventeenth century, is decorated with many ex-voto, including suspended boat models, showing the gratitude of sailors. Classified as a historic monument in 1938, it remains an important place of pilgrimage, especially on the feast of Pentecost, and symbolizes the faith and attachment of the inhabitants to the Virgin Mary, protector of sailors.
